Louise Noun-Mary Louise Smith Iowa Women's Archives
The Louise Noun-Mary Louise Smith Iowa Women's Archives is located on the third floor of the Main Library in the University of Iowa Libraries system in Iowa City, Iowa. It was funded when Louise Noun sold a Frida Kahlo painting titled “Self Portrait with Loose Hair” for $1.65 million through Christie’s in New York on May 15, 1991. “It is fitting that the Archives was funded by the sale of a Frida Kahlo painting…() Kahlo’s paintings have been rescued from obscurity in recent years…the IWA was meant to rescue the papers of Iowa women from obscurity, neglect, or destruction…"〔Mason, K. M. (2003). Fostering Diversity in Archival Collections: The Iowa Women's Archives. ''Collection Management,'' 27(2), 23-31. Retrieved 10 November 2014.〕
The Archives was officially established in 1992 and is named after its two founders, Noun and Mary Louise Smith.
==Mission Statement==
The Mission statement for the Iowa Women's Archives was established as follows: “Inspired by the vision of its founders, the Louise Noun – Mary Louise Smith Iowa Women’s Archives nourishes creative research, learning, and teaching by providing collections and a separate space dedicated to the women of Iowa and their history. The Archives fulfills its mission by collecting and making available primary sources about the history of Iowa women from all walks of life. It undertakes a robust outreach program to gather and preserve the history of groups underrepresented in archives. Through its programs and online resources, the Iowa Women’s Archives serves a broad audience ranging from students and scholars to the general public.”〔History and Mission of the Iowa Women's Archives () Retrieved 6 December 2014.〕
